Return and Reintegration

ILSI support for the return home: reintegration planning, financial guidance, and turning savings and skills into a stable future.

Coming home is its own transition, and it is one migrant workers often prepare for the least. Years of earnings, new skills, and changed family circumstances all need to be brought together into a plan. This is the third stage of ILSI membership.

What reintegration support includes

  • Return planning. A conversation, before or shortly after you arrive home, about your finances, health, and family situation.
  • Financial guidance. Practical advice on managing a lump sum of savings or severance pay safely, and avoiding high-risk informal investment schemes.
  • Skills recognition. Help identifying how skills gained abroad — trades, supervisory experience, language — can translate into work or business at home.
  • Responsible investment access. Where you want to invest savings productively, ILSI's responsible investment programme connects members to vetted opportunities rather than informal schemes.
  • Ongoing welfare support. For members who return earlier than planned due to injury, hardship, or the end of a contract, casework support continues after arrival — see returning home for urgent return situations.

Family resources

Reintegration affects the whole household, not just the returning worker. See our family resources for guidance aimed at spouses, children and parents managing the return.

Why this stage is easy to overlook

Pre-departure preparation and in-country protection both have an obvious moment of urgency attached to them, which is often why they receive the most attention. Return can feel, by comparison, like the easy part — the worker is safe, home, and the difficult journey is over. In practice, poor planning at exactly this stage is one of the most common reasons years of hard-earned savings do not translate into lasting security. ILSI treats reintegration with the same seriousness as the earlier stages precisely because it is where the whole journey's purpose is either realised or lost.

A gradual, not sudden, transition

Reintegration support does not end on the day a member arrives home. Financial guidance, skills recognition and, where relevant, responsible investment referrals can continue for months afterward, since good decisions about a lump sum of savings are rarely made well under time pressure at the airport.

Reintegration after a difficult experience

Not every return follows a completed contract. Where a member returns early due to injury, unresolved wage disputes, or another hardship, reintegration support is adapted to that reality — continuing casework alongside, not instead of, practical return planning. See return home if you need to arrange an urgent departure.
